Lawrence “Larry” Heckmann, Jr., 77, Krakow, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 21, 2022, from complications of ALS. He was born on February 25, 1945, in Elgin, IL to the late Lawrence Sr. and Gertrude (Neumann) Heckmann. He married Dawn Colby on June 21, 1969, in DeKalb, IL and they shared 53 wonderful years together.
Larry graduated from Northern Illinois University and had a successful career in sales and management. He was a dedicated member of St. John Lutheran Church in Pulaski. He enjoyed attending weekly bible studies at church and with Pastor John in Shawano. An avid outdoorsman, Larry liked going up north to ‘the shack’ in Brantwood with his son. He was a fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers. He loved playing cards and indulging in a beer and a cigar. Larry was always happy to give you a big hug, a thumbs up, and send you away with a “See you later, bye”.
Larry’s true joy was spending time with his family and friends. He was a dedicated Grandpa who enjoyed watching his grandchildren play their various sports. Larry especially enjoyed teaching them to fish from his pond, ride the four-wheeler, and shoot his guns.
Larry will be sadly missed by his wife, Dawn, his daughter, Julie (Gary) Szot, Crystal Lake, IL; his son, Jeff (Jenny) Heckmann, Howard; grandchildren: Cassandra, Brenna, Nolan, and Garrin Szot, Jessica and Alyssa Heckmann, brother: Gary Heckmann, LaSalle, IL: sister-in-law: Kendra (Mike) Royer, Hinkley, IL: brother-in-law: Denny Colby, Murray, KY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Gertrude: his father-in-law and mother-in-law: Verdette (Adella Mae) Colby: brothers-in-law: Roger (Karen) Colby and Merrill Colby.
Locally, friends are invited to gather with the family at Marnocha Funeral Home, 186 E. Pulaski St., Pulaski, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, September 26. The visitation continues at St. John Lutheran Church, 910 St. Augustine St., Pulaski on Tuesday the 27th at 10:00a.m. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Larry Yaw officiating. There will also be a visitation for family and friends in Illinois at Olson Funeral Home, Quiram Chapel in Sycamore on Saturday, October 1 from 10:00a.m. – 12:00p.m. Burial will take place at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Hinckley, IL following the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the ALS Foundation, ProMedica Hospice, or St. John Lutheran Church in Pulaski.
