Fr. Sebastian Kus, O.F.M., 88, a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Assumption B.V.M. Province, died Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at a Green Bay hospital. The son of Stanislaus and Frances (Wypasek) Kus was born February 29, 1928, in Jangrot, Poland. After immigrating to the United States, he completed his secondary education at St. Mary’s Prep in Orchard Lake, Michigan, and completed his studies with the friars in Burlington, Wisconsin, at Lourdes Seminary in Cedar Lake, Indiana, and at Christ the King Seminary in West Chicago, Illinois. He made his Solemn Profession on August 15, 1953, in Burlington, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1957 in Joliet, Illinois.
Fr. Sebastian worked for many years for Franciscan Publishers in Pulaski, where he served as the editor of several Polish publications, including the Miesiecznik Franciszkanski (Franciscan Monthly), for 34 years. He moved to Lodi, New Jersey, in 1993, where he served as Chaplain to the Felician Sisters until 2007, at which time he returned to the Assumption Friary in Pulaski.
Fr. Sebastian was a kind, quiet, and unassuming man, dedicated to his life as a priest and friar. He had the distinction of having caught the ‘record fish’ at the Villa. The people of Pulaski might remember him for his almost daily walks on the main street in front of the friary. He always had a smile and a friendly wave.
In addition to his brother friars of the Assumption B.V.M. Province, he is survived by a sister, Stella Kus-Sobek, England, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 26th at Assumption B.V.M. Church in Pulaski, Provincial Minister Fr. James Gannon, O.F.M. presiding and Fr. Placid Stroik, O.F.M. homilist. Burial followed in the Provincial Cemetery.
