Fr. Melvin Wierzbicki, O.F.M., a member of the Franciscan Friars of the Assumption B.V.M. Province died Thursday, November 21, 2019, in Milwaukee. The son of Michael and Louise (Walczyk) Wierzbicki was born August 4, 1927, in Milwaukee and baptized Michael on August 14th at St. Casimir Church. He attended St. Barbara Elementary School in Milwaukee, graduating in 1941 and entered St. Bonaventure Minor Seminary High School, graduating in 1945.
After high school, Michael entered the Novitiate of the Assumption BVM Province in Pulaski and received the name,
Melvin. He made solemn profession on June 26, 1949, and was ordained a priest on June 11, 1953. Fr. Melvin spent many years at Assumption B.V.M. Friary in Pulaski, helping out at weekend Masses at various churches in the area. He was a friendly man with a nice smile, and he always took the time to say hello. Melvin was an avid birder, and studied the various birds on the friars’ property.
In addition to his brother friars, Fr. Melvin is survived by siblings: Lois (Wierzbicki) Mueller and Thomas Willow.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Louise and siblings: Sr. Lucina (Rose Marie ) Wierzbicki, Rita Louise (Wierzbicki) Elliott, Eugene Wierzbicki, and Charlette (Wierzbicki) Smyth.
The Funeral Mass was celebrated in Milwaukee on Monday, November 25th. Interment will take place in the Provincial Cemetery in Pulaski.
