mathews-stella-webStella M. Mathews, 93, Green Bay and formerly of Sobieski, died peacefully Saturday morning, September 24, 2016. The daughter of the late Joseph and Clara (Stopka) Gaura was born April 29, 1923, in Suamico. On November 3, 1945, she married Peter A. Mathews at St. John Cantius Church in Sobieski. The couple raised their family and lived in Illinois for many years. The family belonged to St. Joseph Parish in Aurora, IL. Stella was a Cub Scout Den Mother with the St. Joseph Cub Scout Pack 357 for nine very enjoyable years.

Stella liked to play cards, listen to polka music, and travel across our beautiful country. She loved to sew and crochet and was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan, even when she lived in Illinois. After Pete retired in 1981, the couple moved back to Sobieski.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law: William (Cathy) Mathews, Colorado Springs, CO; one grandson: Brian (Heather) Mathews, Hudson, WI; two great-granddaughters, Bailey and Olivia Mathews, Hudson; two sisters: Elizabeth (Ervin) Oskey, Green Bay, Christina Tilque, Green Bay, and a brother-in-law: Robert Sandstrom, Stevens Point; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, on August 24, 2008; one daughter: Elaine Julia Mathews; three brothers: Peter (Alice), Anthony (Marie), and Isadore (Jane) Gaura; and four sisters: Clara Sandstrom, Lottie (Stanley) Grochowski, Mary (Gus) Kariotis, and Julia (Thaddeus) Pszanka.

The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 1st at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church in Sobieski, Fr. Gerald Prusakowski, O.F.M. presiding. Burial took place in St. John Cantius Cemetery, Sobieski.
