Marian Phyllis (Wood) Schroeder, 94, Pulaski, passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters Friday, February 16, 2018, following a short illness.

The daughter of Albert and Anna (Johnson) Wood was born June 20, 1923, in Mattoon. She was a graduate of Pulaski High School, Outagamie Rural Normal School, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. On December 27, 1947, she married Florian “Pluto” Schroeder at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pulaski.

Affectionately known as “Marian the Librarian,” she started her teaching career in one-room schools in Door and Shawano counties and retired from Glenbrook Elementary School after working in the Pulaski School District for over 35 years. She belonged to both the state and county retired teacher organizations.

She was very active in the community. She served as curator of the Pulaski Area Museum and was a charter member of the Pulaski Area Historical Society. Marian was also a member of the Pulaski American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #337, for over 70 years. She received the Pulaski Community Service Award from the Pulaski Area Chamber of Commerce, the Woman of the Year Award from the Council of Catholic Women of Assumption B.V.M. Parish, and was the first recipient of the F.X. Joswick Award. Marian and Florian were also Grand Marshalls for the Pulaski Polka Days Parade.

She enjoyed watching her grandchildren in their sporting activities and, also, the Brewers, Badgers, Packers and, believe it or not, NASCAR. Always up for a ride, many hours were spent hunting for blackberry patches, looking for mushrooms, asparagus, and pussy willows. Such rides always ended with a visit to a local restaurant. Marian and Florian enjoyed traveling with friends and relatives.

Survivors include her daughters: Laura Schroeder (Ed Surowiec), Green Bay, Brenda (Bob) Bryfczynski, Ashwaubenon, and Claudia (Randy) Ryczkowski, Howard; her grandchildren: Lynn (Mike) Boughton, Lisa (Kevin) Seeling, Paula (Mike) Gajewski, Mike Ryczkowski, Angela Ryczkowski, Billy (Jena Freck) Ryczkowski; and six great-grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister, Edna Palubicki, and several nieces and nephews. She was blessed with many friends and neighbors who cared deeply for her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Florian, on August 19, 2007; her parents, two infant brothers and an infant sister; brothers and sisters-in-law Calvin (Ruth) Wood, Earl (Peg) Wood and brother-in-law Richard Palubicki. She was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Edmund Schroeder, Helen (Joe) Klopotic, Alvin (Agnes) Schroeder, Roman (Edna) Schroeder, Tony Schroeder, Harry (Evelyn) Schroeder, Adeline (Herb) Wielatz, Frank Schroeder, Loraine (Harry) Paradowski, Alice (Howard) Wojcik, and Louise (John) Blasczyk.

She truly made a difference in the community and in the lives of many students. We will miss Mama, Grandma and GG. She was a very special lady and we will cherish her memory.

“It’s such a pretty world today, look at the sun shine.”

The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018,  at Assumption B.V.M. Church, Pulaski, Fr. Patrick Gawrylewski, O.F.M. presiding.  Burial took place in the parish cemetery.
